Best ways to know information about the state of your computer is to embed it in your desktop because it use less ‘click’. Just log on and see the state. In MacOS, the program to show that information is GeekTools. That program embeds text command input (shell command), read a file, and images (RRD tools).
Installation
You can download the program from here. The program is license free for everyone. After the program installed, it will be appeared on Preferences Pane. Just double click the icon to open GeekTool Pref.
Configure to Show the Connectivity Status
On the GeekTool Preferences, Click New Entry and Choose Shell on Roll Menu. Type “ifconfig | grep inet | grep -v 127.0.0.1 | grep -v ::1” on command box. Next, Customize your Color and Font. Don’t forget to reposition the location on your desktop by entry the x, y, and size. Last, enable the GeekTools.
The command means is to show configured network interfaces parameter and show just line contains “inet”, and hide the line contains “127.0.0.1 (it is localhost, because you didn’t need it as information) and ::1”.
Here is my screenshot, the status shown on topleft of the desktop.
When you don’t get network connectivity, the IP Address wouldn’t be shown. In the otherside that application will show all IP Address of your network connectivity, both Airport Extreme or Ethernet Card. So, you’ll know the time when you get connected without clicks anything! Just see your desktop for a few seconds. It’s simple! right?
